Daily Productive Sharing 745 - Trying to "shape" AI to Protect Workers Is A Bad Idea
One helpful tip per day:)
Noah Smith believes that the current idea of regulating AI development to protect jobs is wrong:
Thinking that AI innovation can be shaped to protect workers is a mistake because it is impossible to predict which technologies will enhance human capabilities and which technologies will replace human labor.
Looking back at the Second Industrial Revolution, many related labor forces were replaced. It is not just directly related labor forces that will be replaced, but these replacements may need to be seen over a long time dimension to understand.
What economists should do is to give workers more rights and establish mechanisms for redistribution, such as improving labor and establishing welfare institutions.
