In general, negative events have a bigger impact on our mental state than positive ones.

Neuroscience studies show that negative stimuli elicit a much stronger response in the brain than positive or neutral stimuli, and even three‐month‐olds show a negativity bias in their social interactions.

Research suggests that we tend to make decisions based on negative information more than positive data.

How to create a more positive outlook for yourself:

  1. Pay attention. The first and perhaps most important step is to be aware of this common bias.

  2. Make space for self-reflection.

  3. Establish positive routines.

  4. Use mental models.

We had mentioned some cognitive dilemmas in Monday's share, where the Zeigarnik Effect is our involuntary tendency to remember unfinished tasks. If we look at this issue more abstractly, we can say that we are more easily affected by negative events. Today's share introduces this problem and how to deal with it already.
